Need Honest Opinions on Data Warehousing as a Service in 2026
-
Quick background. We have been running an on-prem data warehouse for about five years and it is starting to show its age badly. Queries that used to take seconds now take minutes. Adding new data sources feels like surgery every time. The maintenance alone is eating up half our data team's bandwidth.
So naturally everyone is pushing us toward data warehousing as a service and on paper it sounds like the obvious move. But I have talked to enough people off the record to know that the migration stories are not always as smooth as the vendor slides make them look. Before we commit to anything I want to hear from people who have actually lived through this.
What People Who Already Made the Switch Keep Telling Us
Reached out to a few companies in our industry who moved to a cloud based data warehouse in the last year. Here is what kept coming up in those conversations:
Pick your data warehousing company based on who asks the most questions about your current data mess not who gives the smoothest demo because the migration is where everything gets realData warehousing as a service sounds hands off until you realize that someone still needs to own data governance, access controls, and quality checks on your side
The cost savings from moving to a cloud based data warehouse are real but only if you architect it properly upfront because badly structured cloud warehouses can actually cost more than on-prem within a yearDo not let any data warehousing company convince you to migrate everything at once because the teams that moved in phases had significantly fewer disasters
Make sure your existing BI tools and dashboards actually work with the new setup before migrating because compatibility issues surfaced way more often than anyone expectedAsk specifically about data latency and query performance under your actual workload not their benchmark numbers because those are rarely the same thing
Final Thought
Honestly still on the fence about this whole move. The upside of cloud based data warehouse migration is clear but so are the risks if we pick the wrong partner or rush the process. If you have been through this recently whether it went great or completely sideways I would genuinely appreciate hearing your story. What would you do differently if you could start over?
