How do you choose a good masonry contractor?

I’m planning to have some masonry work done on an older property in New Jersey, and I’m trying to figure out what I should look for before hiring anyone. The project may involve some brick repairs and possibly rebuilding part of a small retaining wall. There seem to be quite a few New Jersey masonry contractors, but I’m not sure what questions are most important to ask about experience, materials, estimates, and warranties. For anyone who has hired a masonry contractor recently, what helped you tell the reliable companies from the ones to avoid?
