Seattle Ends Losing Streak Behind Strong Second-Half Performance While Toronto’s Injuries Continue to Hurt
The Seattle Storm earned a much-needed win on Wednesday night, defeating the short-handed Toronto Tempo 90-78 behind a strong performance from rookie Flau’jae Johnson and a late defensive push.
Johnson led Seattle with 20 points, while Dominique Malonga added 18 points as the Storm closed the game strongly to secure the victory.
The win helped Seattle end a difficult stretch in which the team had lost 14 of its previous 15 games.
Storm Take Control Late Against Tempo
Seattle entered the fourth quarter with momentum after finishing the third period on an 11-4 run. That surge gave the Storm a 64-61 advantage heading into the final period.
The Storm continued their strong play early in the fourth quarter, opening the period with a 9-2 run to extend their lead to double digits.
Jade Melbourne contributed an all-around performance with 16 points and seven assists, helping Seattle maintain control throughout the closing minutes.
Awa Fam and Zia Cooke also provided valuable scoring support, each finishing with 10 points.
Toronto Tempo Continue Fighting Through Injuries
Toronto entered the matchup without several of its top offensive players.
The Tempo were missing leading scorer Marina Mabrey due to an adductor injury, while Brittney Sykes and Nyara Sabally were also unavailable because of injuries.
Despite the missing starters, rookie guard Kiki Rice stepped up with a career-best performance. Rice scored a season-high 24 points, providing much-needed offense for Toronto.
Isabelle Harrison also delivered a strong performance with 17 points and 14 rebounds, keeping the Tempo competitive throughout the game.
Rookie Performances Highlight Future Potential
Although Toronto was unable to secure the win, the performance from Kiki Rice showed the potential of the young roster.
With multiple veterans sidelined, Toronto’s younger players have been forced into larger roles. Those opportunities could become valuable experience as the expansion franchise continues building for the future.
Seattle also received another encouraging performance from its young talent, with Flau’jae Johnson continuing to develop into an important contributor.
Game Outlook
