How Do You Check Your Carry-On Size Before Flying?

I am checking my carry‑on before a flight and realized that I have usually judged the size just by looking at the suitcase.
I am wondering how other travelers actually measure their bags. Do you measure the outside dimensions, including the wheels and handles?. Do you check the weight at home as well?
I am especially interested in how people handle carry‑ons when the bag's close, to the airline’s size limit. Is carry‑on better to leave some space rather than packing the suitcase completely full?
I am putting together a pre‑flight checklist so I am interested to know what others normally check before heading to the airport.
