Good morning. I took a job in Fresno County starting in a couple of months and I am moving from out of state, so I am building my picture of the area from scratch. I have a kid with asthma, which means air quality is more than a passing concern for us, and I am also trying to understand the job market and cost of living beyond what the relocation websites say. What should I be reading to get an accurate sense of the county before we land? We will be renting for the first year while we figure out which part of the county suits us.

For air quality, go straight to the valley air district, they publish daily conditions and forecasts and you will want that bookmarked permanently rather than as a curiosity. Summer and wildfire smoke season are the periods to plan around, and a good home filtration setup is worth budgeting for before you arrive. For the broader county picture, jobs, development, local government, I read the Fresno page on CA Today https://catoday.news/fresno-county . Relocation sites will undersell the summer heat, so factor that in honestly. Tip: when you look at neighborhoods, ask about proximity to major roadways, it makes a measurable difference for a kid with asthma.
