Something is wrong with our heat pump and I don't know how urgent it is. The outdoor unit is running but there's a loud grinding noise that started last night, and the house is barely warming. I shut it off for now and we're using space heaters. Part of me wants to just leave it off until Monday, part of me worries that leaving it broken makes it worse. Any advice on whether grinding is a call-tonight problem? For what it's worth the unit is maybe six years old and has never had a service visit, which I'm now realizing might be part of the story. Also unclear whether a noise like that is covered under any kind of warranty at this age.

You did the right thing shutting it down. Grinding usually means a fan motor bearing or something contacting the fan blade, and running it in that condition is how a repair turns into a replacement. So no, don't switch it back on to test it again. Whether you call tonight depends mostly on how cold the house gets, since the damage risk is already handled by leaving it off. We ended up calling Product Air for Emergency Heat Pump Repair in Seattle when ours did this, and it was a motor. Space heaters are fine short term, just spread them across circuits so you're not tripping breakers all evening.
