While your GPU still plays a big role with regards to overall gaming experience, the CPU definitely impacts frame rates, particularly at 1080p and 1440p resolutions, which means it's important to be taken into consideration instead of an after-thought. For the majority of gamers, the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is currently the best gaming CPU on the market, thanks to its potent performance, affordability, power efficiency, and continuous support of the AM5 platform.Of note is its slightly newer sibling, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, which is currently the fastest available gaming processor, but the 9800X3D is the better suggestion as it doesn't lag by much at around 3% on average with most buyers being able to see a significant price difference. If you're making content too, then the Ryzen 9 9950X3D is a good option as it has 16 cores, 32 threads and is great at gaming and even better at editing or rendering . In terms of budget, the Ryzen 5 9600X is a solid 6-core Zen 5 AM5 choice for budget-conscious gaming PCs, and the Ryzen 5 7600X is a solid budget-friendly AM5 gaming option, but it does require DDR5 memory and may contribute to the overall build cost based on your build configuration. There's a bit more of a mixed picture on the Intel side at present. The Core Ultra 5 250K Plus retains decent gaming performance while at the same time having significantly more productive speed of performance, but overall, AMD is the leader in the gaming market, and Intel will catch up on the next-gen Nova Lake chips that are anticipated to hit sometime next year. For those who are looking for the ultimate in CPU power and can afford it, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 offers the most amount of cache memory and 16 cores, ideal for creators and developers rather than gaming purists. I didn't think I could ever use a tool to compare benchmarks, but I found techyassist's comparison really helpful to cross check real world performance before I made my final decision.
