  • Hi everyone. My wife's birthday is coming up and I want to do something other than the usual dinner. She's mentioned a few times that she'd love to try pottery, and honestly I'm curious about it too. Neither of us has ever touched clay, so we'd need something very beginner friendly. We live near downtown Austin, so somewhere close would be ideal. Is it worth booking a class for two, and what should I expect price wise? Also, do you get to keep what you make, or is it just for fun? Any tips on what to wear or bring would help too.

  • Great idea, we did exactly that for our anniversary and it beat any restaurant. We booked one of the pottery classes in Austin at Pottery Studio 1, right downtown. They have a couples class for $200, which includes everything, and they really don't expect you to know anything; the instructor told us most people come in with zero experience. In two hours we each made a mug and a small bowl, chose the shape and decorated them ourselves. Yes, you keep what you make, but they need to fire it first, so pickup is about two to three weeks later. That part was actually nice, like getting a second little gift. Book an evening slot if you can, the 6 pm one felt relaxed and not rushed. And wear clothes you don't care about, clay gets everywhere.
