Hi everyone,
I started out wanting to dropship on Shopify like many people here, but my product category pushed me toward a different model. I wanted to share that experience, because I think it is useful for anyone choosing what to sell before they commit to dropshipping.
My niche is batteries in Pakistan. I run https://daewoobattery.com on Shopify, and early on I quickly learned that pure dropshipping simply does not work for this kind of product. Here is why, and what I switched to.
Why dropshipping did not fit:
Heavy and fragile items. Batteries are heavy and contain acid, so long distance dropship shipping leads to damage, delays, and very high costs.
Installation matters. Customers expect doorstep delivery and fitting, which a far away dropship supplier cannot provide.
Trust and authenticity. In my market buyers fear fake or refurbished units, so they want a verified local seller with a warranty card, not an anonymous shipment.
Returns are painful. Handling a faulty heavy item through a dropship chain is slow and frustrating for the customer.
What I did instead:
I moved to a local stock and fast fulfillment model while keeping the Shopify store as my storefront. Local inventory plus same day delivery and installation in major cities gave customers the speed of online shopping with the trust of a local shop. Shopify still handled the catalog, checkout, and SEO beautifully.
My takeaway is simple. Dropshipping is excellent for light, easy to ship, low risk products, but some categories need local fulfillment to win on trust and delivery. Choosing the right model for your product matters more than the model itself.
So I am curious. For those of you dropshipping successfully, which product traits do you look for before picking a niche? And has anyone here moved from dropshipping to holding stock, and was it worth it?
Thanks for reading.
