What should I consider when choosing a 12V RV battery for camping?

  • I am researching a replacement battery for my camper because I want a more dependable power source for longer trips. My current setup handles basic electrical needs, but I would like something with more usable capacity when I am camping away from shore power. During my research, I came across Epoch Batteries and noticed they offer options designed for RV applications.

For anyone who has installed a 12V RV battery, how did you determine the right capacity for your setup? My expected usage includes a refrigerator, LED lights, ventilation fans, phones, a laptop, and occasional inverter use. I am trying to estimate my daily power consumption before deciding whether one battery will be enough.

I am also wondering about charging compatibility. If I move from a lead acid battery to lithium, can the existing RV converter be used, or does it usually need to support a specific lithium charging profile? What about charging from solar panels or the vehicle alternator while driving?

Has anyone here used Epoch Batteries in a camper? I would like to know whether installation was straightforward and if you needed additional equipment for monitoring or charging.

Another thing I am interested in is real world performance. How well have your rv batteries handled repeated charging cycles during regular camping trips? Did switching to lithium make a noticeable difference in usable power or charging time?

Temperature protection is another concern for me. Are there particular features I should look for if the camper will be used in both hot and cold conditions?

For those with experience using a 12V RV battery, what specifications would you prioritize before buying? I am comparing capacity, battery management features, charging requirements, physical dimensions, warranty, and expected cycle life, but I would like to know what other factors experienced RV owners consider important.
